3 Sedation Techniques That Dentists Can Use to Save Lives

3 Sedation Techniques That Dentists Can Use to Save Lives

Did you know that roughly 90 percent of dentists use heavy sedation techniques on patients? That’s right, and dentists’ use of heavy sedation techniques could be problematic for kids and adults alike.

An Aesthesia Progress study of pediatric dentistry and dental anesthesiology training programs revealed  64 percent of dentists said they anticipate an increase in the need for dentist anesthesiologist services in the near future. The study also showed roughly 18 percent of junior high and secondary school students reported moderate dental fear, and the prevalence of dental fear and anxiety among all patients was one of the key reasons for dentists to use heavy sedation techniques.

Although heavy sedation techniques may help patients temporarily alleviate dental fear and anxiety, these methods are not always safe.

For instance, Click2Houston reported the Texas Board of Dental Examiners (TBDE) recorded 102 dental patient deaths between 2010 and 2015, and a small number of dental patients died at Texas dentists’ offices after being sedated or receiving anesthesia. Furthermore, the news outlet pointed out that the TBDE does not inspect these offices to ensure they have equipment in place to save a patient’s life if something goes wrong after heavy sedation techniques are used.

At The Super Dentists, we understand safety is paramount for all of our patients. As such, we ignore heavy sedation techniques and use reliable sedation methods that actually may help save lives.

Our sedation techniques include:

  1. Allowing Parents into Our Treatment Rooms.

Believe it or not, many pediatric dentists won’t allow parents into a child’s treatment room. On the other hand, we prioritize safety and transparency. Thus, if you want to spend time with your child as we clean his or her teeth, you’re welcome to do so at any time.

  2. Deploying a Direct Approach.

We understand pediatric dentistry can be complicated, which is why we’ll devote the time and resources needed to explain our methods. That way, if you ever have concerns or questions, we’re happy to respond to them.

  3. Using State-of-the-Art Equipment.

Every patient deserves superior treatment, and we leverage state-of-the-art equipment and technology to ensure each patient is fully supported.

The Super Dentists is far from an ordinary pediatric dental practice. To differentiate ourselves, we’ll do whatever we can to guarantee both you and your child are safe and comfortable throughout any dental procedure.
