Baby Tooth Extraction

Sometimes, it is necessary to pull a tooth that cannot be repaired, or to protect the other teeth. Called a tooth extraction or tooth removal, this procedure is recommended if a tooth is damaged or decayed, a baby tooth is in the way of a permanent tooth causing space issues, a wisdom tooth is impacted or to make room for orthodontic work if there is crowding.
Child Tooth Extractions at The Super Dentists
A pediatric tooth extraction is a routine procedure that is performed in the office with a mild anesthesia. After the extraction, you will receive instructions for caring for the mouth. Depending on which tooth was removed, your child may have a little swelling or discomfort.
Child Tooth Abscess Extraction
A dental abscess indicates an immediate need for an extraction. An abscess typically arises from untreated tooth decay or a dental injury that has allowed bacteria to invade the tooth’s pulp, leading to inflammation and pus formation.
If left untreated, the infection can spread to other areas of the jaw, the face, or even the bloodstream, posing a serious health risk to the child. Even if this is a child’s permanent tooth, extraction is required.
Child Tooth Extraction Aftercare
After a child’s tooth extraction, proper aftercare is crucial for promoting healing and minimizing complications. You can use an ice pack for any swelling and may give acetaminophen or other non-aspirin pain relievers for discomfort.
Keep your child’s head elevated during sleep, and provide a soft, easy-to-chew diet for a few days. Discourage the use of straws and spitting as these actions can dislodge the clot and delay healing. Feeding soft foods can also be helpful.

If your super dentist gives a prescription for antibiotics, make sure you give your child the full course of treatment to prevent infections. For most tooth extractions, your child should be back to normal after a few days. Child tooth extraction recovery can vary from person to person.
