Brushing & Flossing

The Super Dentists want your children to have healthy, beautiful teeth that will last them a lifetime. Sometimes, it is necessary to pull a tooth that cannot be repaired, or to protect the other teeth. Called a tooth extraction or tooth removal, this procedure is recommended if a tooth is damaged or decayed, a baby tooth is in the way of a permanent tooth causing space issues, a wisdom tooth is impacted or to make room for orthodontic work if there is crowding.

A tooth extraction is a routine procedure that is performed in the office with a mild anesthesia. After the extraction, you will receive instructions for caring for the mouth. Depending on which tooth was removed, your child may have a little swelling or discomfort. You can use an ice pack for any swelling and may give acetaminophen or other non-aspirin pain relievers for discomfort. Feeding soft foods can also be helpful. If your super dentist gives a prescription for antibiotics, make sure you give your child the full course of treatment to prevent infections. For most tooth extractions, your child should be back to normal after a few days

Advice for Super Parents

“What is the best toothbrush for my child?” is one of the questions we receive most from parents. Dr. Kami Hoss, our co-founder, explains some factors you should consider.
Another question we get is, “What is the best kind of toothpaste for my child?” Dr. Hoss to the rescue again with what to consider when making that decision.
Brush at least two times every day for two minutes using a fluoride toothpaste (children under six years old should only use a pea-sized amount and be instructed not to swallow).
Brush using gentle, short strokes and pay attention to every tooth front and back including at the gumline. Brush the chewing surface of each tooth and your tongue. Make sure you thoroughly clean areas that have had dental work such as fillings and crowns.
A soft bristle toothbrush is recommended, and a small brush head can make it easier to reach back teeth. Powered toothbrushes can be more effective at removing plaque and food particles, but a manual brush does a great job, too.
Floss at least once a day, perhaps before bedtime. Wrap the dental floss around your fingers and gently go along each tooth making a C shape. Move the dental floss up and carefully down to the gumline. Flossing reaches places your toothbrush cannot.
Find a dental floss that you find most comfortable, whether it be unwaxed or waxed. It also comes in a variety of flavors for your flossing enjoyment.
Rinse to remove any debris.
