What is a pediatric dentist?

A pediatric dentist serves as a specialist in the field of dentistry dealing particularly with the oral healthcare of children. This dental professional plays an important role in a child's oral health, from infancy to the teenage years. The Super Dentists is the premier pediatric dental network in San Diego, with six locations throughout the city.

How often should you go to the dentist?

We recommend a check-up every six months to prevent cavities and other dental problems. However, more frequent check-ups may be necessary based on your personal oral health. If you or your child have experienced cavities, toothaches, or other dental issues, you may need to visit The Super Dentists every 2-3 months, at least until any problems are taken care of.

When should a baby first go to the dentist?

A child should go to the dentist by age 1 or within six months after the first tooth erupts, according to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD). Because a child's primary teeth typically begin growing in around 6 months of age, taking a baby to the dentist empowers parents to take a proactive approach to their child's oral health. And ultimately, this allows parents to reduce a child's risk of short- and long-term oral health issues. What’s more, a baby’s first visit to the dentist encourages life-long, positive dental care habits. The Super Dentists have the region’s best pediatric dentist and orthodontic team, and we also treat teenagers, adults, and senior citizens as well!

How many baby teeth do we lose?

Typically, your child will lose all 20 of his or her baby teeth over the course of several years. This usually occurs by the age of 13. Baby teeth eventually will be replaced by up to 32 permanent teeth (28 without wisdom teeth). And as your child loses baby teeth, permanent ones will begin to erupt in their place.

How many teeth do children have?

Children have 20 baby teeth – 10 on the top and 10 on the bottom. These teeth act as placeholders for the adult teeth that grow in after the baby teeth fall out. Adults have more teeth than children. Most adults have 32 teeth, including four canines, eight incisors, eight premolars and 12 molars (as well as four wisdom teeth).

When do kids’ teeth fall out?

Children typically start losing their baby teeth around the age of 6 or 7, following a somewhat predictable sequence that begins with the central incisors and progresses to the second molars. These baby teeth are gradually replaced by permanent teeth, starting with the central incisors again and following a similar order. However, it's essential to note that the exact timing can vary among individuals. Some children may experience these dental milestones earlier or later. If parents have concerns about their child's dental development, consulting a pediatric dentist is advisable. Maintaining good oral hygiene practices, regular dental check-ups, and a balanced diet can help ensure healthy teeth during this transition.

Why should babies see a dentist?

Ideally, your child's first visit to the dentist should happen before his or her first birthday. Taking your child to the dentist at a young age empowers you to prevent problems such as tooth decay, along with allowing you to learn how to clean your child's teeth and identify his or her fluoride needs. Plus, bringing your child to the dentist early often leads to a lifetime of good oral care habits and acclimates your child to the dental office, reducing the stress frequently associated with visiting the dentist.
